Danube River Drought Forces Hungary to Shut Down Nuclear Plant for First Time
Hungary has fully shut down its sole nuclear power plant for the first time in its 44-year history due to record low Danube River levels, affecting cooling systems at the Paks facility. The plant, located 120 km south of Budapest, accounts for 40% of the country's electricity generation. Prime Minister Peter Magyar's government is implementing emergency measures including voluntary industrial consumption cuts and mandatory electricity restrictions on public services as temperatures are expected to reach 37-38°C over the next six days.
