IMO Adopts New International Safety Code for Autonomous Ships (MASS Code)
The International Maritime Organization adopted the MASS Code to regulate autonomous vessels operated by artificial intelligence or remote control. The framework establishes requirements for navigation, cybersecurity, remote operations, and remote operation centers (ROCs). It will come into force on July 1, 2026, in a non-mandatory phase, with a projection towards mandatory status in 2030 and entry into force in 2032.
