Russia's "Syria Express" Convoys May Be Combining Multiple AIS Tricks
Two sanctioned Russian vessels—the oil tanker General Skobelev and cargo ship Sparta—along with replenishment oiler Akademik Pashin departed Baltic ports in April 2026 bound for Tartus, Syria. The convoy employed multiple AIS evasion tactics including signal darkness and possible spoofing, arriving May 11. This represents a significant increase in deceptive sophistication compared to previous Syria Express operations.
