Portonave has concluded the arrival of 14 new electric Rubber Tyred Gantry (e-RTG) cranes, which reinforce the Terminal's yard fleet. The last seven units arrived at the Itajaí/Navegantes Port Complex aboard the vessel Rui Fu, which sailed from Tanzania on July 3rd.
The first seven e-RTGs disembarked at the beginning of the month and are expected to become operational by mid-August. Meanwhile, the units arriving now will start their activities at a later date.
Each of these pieces of equipment measures 28 meters in height, weighs 156 tons, and is 100% electric, reinforcing the company's decarbonization strategy.
From the Konecranes brand, designed in Finland and assembled in China, the new e-RTGs arrive ready to operate in the yard's electrification system. This structure has served the Terminal's fleet since 2016, when Portonave electrified its diesel-powered cranes and reduced the emission of polluting gases from these pieces of equipment by 96.5%.
Each unit moves up to 41 tons and stacks containers up to seven levels high (due to safety protocol, the company operates with a limit of five). The equipment also features anti-collision sensors, emergency braking during lifting, electronic load sway control, and automatic lubrication. When lifting a container, the operator is informed of the unit's weight on a screen.
Total Investments
The renewed yard fleet is part of a package of over R$ 500 million (USD 89.2 million) in 100% electric equipment, which also includes two Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes, Reach Stackers, cargo inspection scanners, and Terminal Tractors.
The STS cranes are the most anticipated part of this next phase. These cranes were acquired from the Chinese manufacturer ZPMC, move loads of up0 to 100 tons at a height of 55 meters, and will be the first of this size in Brazil, prepared to operate vessels up to 400 meters in length.
The fleet expansion is progressing alongside the Pier Adaptation Work, which began in January 2024 and is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2026. This work will enable Portonave to receive this new class of vessels. At the end of the process, the Terminal will have 8 STS and 32 RTGs, and the handling capacity will jump from 1.5 million to 2 million TEUs per year. In total, investments in works and equipment exceed R$ 2 billion (USD 357 million).
