Hapag-Lloyd reported that it has been closely monitoring the decreasing water levels in the Amazon region, thus anticipating a low water surcharge (LWS) for September.
The shipping company details that according to the "Initial Notice on the 2026 Dry Season", issued on July 14, 2026, by the Western Amazon River Authority (Capitania Fluvial da Amazônia Ocidental), the region could experience a more severe dry season than in previous years, with a high probability of these conditions occurring during the second half of September.
Due to the continuous drop in the water level of the Amazon River, Hapag-Lloyd established an LWS for maritime transport to and from the Port of Manaus, Brazil, a necessary surcharge to compensate for increased costs and operational complexities associated with navigation under these conditions.
This low water surcharge will apply to all cargo with a pricing date from September 12, 2026, and will be USD 1,350 per container, applicable to all unit types.
"We will continuously monitor the water level in the Amazon River and adjust the effective date in case the start of the dry season is delayed. In such a case, a new announcement will be published 30 days in advance," Hapag-Lloyd detailed.
