According to Santos Port Authority (APS), the vessel suffered engine failure at around 3:15 pm local time while entering the Santos navigation channel empty to load sugar. The pilot on board deployed both emergency anchors, allowing the vessel to slow down and come to a controlled stop without causing any allision with other objects. Five tug boats assisted the distressed vessel and towed it to the port's berthing area.
The Santos-Guarujá ferry service was temporarily disrupted. Authorities suspended ferry crossings as a precaution while the disabled bulk carrier was stabilised and a towing operation was being conducted.
