The Port of Barcelona has completed the renovation of the ASTA building, one of the historical headquarters of the Barcelona Port Authority. The modernization of the building has preserved its structure but has completely transformed its exterior and interior layout, turning it into a versatile, efficient, and sustainable space.
Once the renovation is complete, the new ASTA building will continue to house spaces for Port of Barcelona employees, such as the Port Police agents, who already inaugurated their new headquarters in a more than 2,000 square meter annex two years ago. The main building, almost 14,000 square meters, will house the Archive and the Heritage, Conservation, and Navigation Aids departments of the Port of Barcelona, while also allowing the remaining spaces to be leased to companies related to the logistics sector.
The works, which began in September 2021, cost 20.8 million euros plus VAT. The project has obtained public funding within the Energy Consumption Reduction Plan in the General State Administration, specific objective RSO2.1 of the Pluriregional FEDER Program of Spain 2021-2027, co-financed by the European Union (EU).
Sustainable Building
The renovation has prioritized the energy efficiency of the building, minimizing its environmental impact. In a pioneering way, the main building's air conditioning system has been designed to be supplied with renewable energy from the cold and heat network that the company Ecoenergies Barcelona is developing.
This network is an innovative example of a circular economy, as it utilizes the residual cold generated by the regasification of LNG that arrives by ship at the Enagás terminal, at the Energy dock, for industrial uses and building air conditioning, saving the emission of 32,000 tons of CO2 annually.
In this way, the ASTA building will not only consume 100% renewable electricity, like all buildings of the Barcelona Port Authority, but its air conditioning system and domestic hot water supply will also operate with green energy.
