Global Ports Holdings' new 24-year concession agreement with Administración del Sistema Portuario Nacional (ASIPONA) Acapulco will see the company operate and progressively invest across an approximately 17,199-square-meter/185,129-square-foot cruise area.
This first GPH cruise port concession in Mexico establishes a long-term framework aimed at strengthening Acapulco's role in Mexican Riviera itineraries.
Planned improvements will focus on modernizing the cruise terminal, improving passenger flow, enhancing operational efficiency and safety, upgrading retail and food and beverage offerings and elevating the overall experience.
GPH will also work with cruise lines, government partners and local tourism stakeholders to develop new destination experiences and shoreside concepts that highlight Acapulco's culture, cuisine, heritage and natural beauty while creating opportunities for local businesses and communities.
In parallel, to support larger ships, ASIPONA Acapulco is building a new 350-meter/1,148-foot cruise pier, funded through public resources and scheduled for completion during first quarter 2027.
Raymundo Sánchez López, general director of ASIPONA Acapulco, welcomed Emilio Vázquez Villanueva as GM of Global Ports Holding in Acapulco and said they will work closely to coordinate the Acapulco Cruise Port improvements.
Acapulco Cruise Port has a new brand identity inspired by one of the city's most recognizable symbols, the La Quebrada cliff divers. The logo's turquoise color reflects the waters of Acapulco Bay.
The logo was unveiled at an event that brought together representatives of Guerrero's state government, ASIPONA Acapulco, GPH, Acapulco Cruise Port, tourism stakeholders and the local community.
Covadonga Gómez Huerta, undersecretary of tourism services, speaking on behalf of Gov. Evelyn Salgado Pineda, called the project a "tremendous opportunity to strengthen Guerrero's tourism sector, attract more visitors and create greater prosperity for families throughout the state.
"The unveiling of the new identity for Acapulco Cruise Port represents far more than a new look; it signals the beginning of a new era for cruise tourism and an important step toward reinforcing Acapulco's position as one of Mexico's premier destinations."
The governor's remarks also conveyed that GPH's decision to invest in Acapulco "sends a powerful message to the international tourism industry. As the world's largest cruise port management company, its commitment reflects confidence in the destination's potential and demonstrates that Acapulco is ready to write an exciting new chapter in its history."
According to Mike Maura Jr., regional director, Americas, GPH, "This handover signifies the strong collaboration and partnership between ASIPONA and GPH and our shared commitment to Acapulco's cruise tourism sector. We are thrilled to be here in Acapulco and are excited with what the future holds."
Clarivette Diaz, regional director, Latin America, GPH, added the new identity "communicates our confidence in Acapulco and our ambition for the future of its cruise sector. Acapulco has an extraordinary tourism legacy, a rich maritime history and a cultural identity that is recognized around the world.
"Working closely with ASIPONA, the government of Guerrero, our cruise line partners and the local community, we intend to build upon those strengths and create a port experience that is modern, welcoming and unmistakably Acapulco."
