The Panama Canal is continuing the prequalification process for companies interested in developing new port projects linked to the interoceanic waterway, with a scheduled closing date of July 9, 2026. The announcement was made by the Minister for Canal Affairs, José Ramón Icaza, who emphasized that the initiative seeks to strengthen logistics infrastructure and respond to the growth of international maritime trade.
The process includes the future concession for the development of two container port terminals, located in Corozal, on the Pacific, and Telfers, on the Atlantic. Concurrently, the Panama Canal is advancing with technical and environmental studies for the Indio River reservoir project, as well as agreements for the resettlement of involved communities, with the aim of ensuring the necessary water security for the waterway's operation.
The execution of these projects reflects a long-term strategy aimed at expanding the Panama Canal's operational capacity and anticipating the evolution of global maritime trade. The incorporation of new port infrastructure, along with initiatives to guarantee water availability, will allow for the continuity of operations and more efficiently respond to future demands of international maritime transport.
