The Ministry of Production (Produce) announced the temporary prohibition of the extraction and landing of bonito (Sarda chiliensis chiliensis) at all points along the Peruvian coast. The decision was made after verifying that 90% of the Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) established for bonito fishing in 2026 had been reached.

The General Directorate of Supervision, Inspection, and Sanction (DGSFS-PA) communicated the provision in compliance with the fisheries management measures approved by Ministerial Resolution N.° 000114-2026-PRODUCE. This resolution established the maximum allowed quotas to ensure the responsible and sustainable use of the species.
Currently, there are no authorized points for bonito landing nationwide, as the list of authorized landing sites for this activity has also expired.
The Vice Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Jesús Barrientos, emphasized that these actions respond to the State's commitment to the conservation of hydrobiological resources and the protection of formal fishing activity.
"Catch quotas are established based on technical and scientific criteria to ensure the sustainability of the bonito resource and prevent its overexploitation. Compliance with these measures is fundamental to protect the balance of the marine ecosystem and guarantee the continuity of artisanal fishing for the benefit of thousands of Peruvian families," he affirmed.
The Ministry of Production urged fishing vessel owners, landing point administrators, transporters, marketers, markets, restaurants, and processing plants to respect the current provisions and join the fight against illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing.
Bonito extraction activities were progressively suspended after verifying compliance with the catch limits established for the different authorized fleets, in accordance with the resolutions issued by the fishing authority.
Finally, Produce reiterated that it will continue to strengthen supervision and inspection actions throughout the coast, with the aim of ensuring the responsible use of marine resources and preserving the sustainability of Peruvian fishing for future generations.
