Peruvian potatoes are consolidating their position in the world, thanks to the articulated work between the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri), through the National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa), and thousands of family farming producers, with which the flagship tuber continues to conquer international tables.
Currently, Peru has current phytosanitary access to export potatoes to 13 international markets. This opening not only boosts agro-exports but also positions this ancient crop as a symbol of our country's biodiversity, quality, and agricultural wealth.
As a result of this strategy, Peruvian potato exports registered a 19% growth during the 2025 campaign, exceeding 11,000 tons shipped. This increase responds to the high global demand for the variety, origin, and safety standards of the Peruvian product.
Bolivia, Brazil, the United States, and various European countries stand out as the main commercial destinations. This export flow directly benefits small producers in key regions such as Cajamarca, Junín, Huánuco, Cusco, Ayacucho, Apurímac, Puno, Arequipa, and Ica, where the crop is the main driver of employment and economic development.
International success is sustained by strict compliance with phytosanitary protocols and international standards required by Senasa, which guarantees the competitiveness of national agriculture against the most demanding buyers.
The pillar of this growth is in the field, with the use of certified seeds, which is fundamental to ensure the health and productivity of harvests. For this reason, Senasa works hand in hand with 1,214 potato seed producers nationwide.
During the last period, the regions with the highest production of quality certified seeds were: Junín (736 tons), Cajamarca (499 tons), Huancavelica (207 tons), and Apurímac (184 tons).
Senasa specialists permanently supervise registration, authorization, and certification processes. The use of these seeds guarantees an increase in crop yield of up to 70%, protecting the farmer's investment and shielding the production chain against pests.
Through these actions, Midagri and Senasa reaffirm their commitment to open more international markets for national products, revaluing the effort of the Peruvian countryside and bringing the pride of our biodiversity to the world.
