The occasion brought together authorities and coordinators from 17 countries responsible for METAREAS (areas into which the world's oceans are divided for the dissemination of forecasts and meteorological warnings to mariners), along with representatives from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO).
During the sessions, discussions focused on how maritime safety information is disseminated and the operation of international meteorological and oceanographic warning systems. Representing the Directorate of Maritime, Fluvial and Lacustrine Traffic were Prefecto Principal Fernando Rodríguez and Oficial Principal Federico Claus.
Among the agenda items were the promulgation of Maritime Safety Information (MSI), the review of IMO and IHO documents, the evolution of the WWMIWS, and the implementation of new digital products for METAREAS, such as those developed under S-100 and S-41X standards. There were also presentations by the IMO, IHO, the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), NAVTEX and SafetyNET services, and other navigation information providers.
The meeting recognized the work carried out by the national Maritime Authority as one of the main operational users of forecasts and warnings for METAREA VI, which covers the Southwest Atlantic. Its presence allowed for firsthand knowledge of the international coordination mechanisms used to prepare and disseminate this information.
