More and more people are including their companion animals in their travel plans, even when the destination involves crossing a border. For this transfer to take place without setbacks, it is necessary to manage the International Veterinary Certificate (CVI) through the National Agri-Food Health and Quality Service (SENASA), a document that certifies that the pet complies with the sanitary requirements demanded by the destination country.
To process it, the first thing travelers should consider, whatever the destination, the type of pet they are traveling with, or the chosen modality, is to inform themselves in advance. The way to do it is very simple: they should consult the requirements search engine to find out what the country they wish to travel to requires, depending on the type of animal being transported.
Once these requirements are known, it is essential to start the process with sufficient anticipation, considering the analysis and documentary correction times for the issuance of the certificate and especially during the high tourist season, when the demand for the procedure grows considerably.
Among the available alternatives, the Digital CVI stands out as the most agile, convenient, and reliable way to process the certificate. It is a completely virtual option, with an electronic signature, that allows you to initiate the application, upload health documentation, and receive the certificate without having to go to an office: everything is resolved from a computer and through an email account.
This modality is enabled for the most chosen destinations by those traveling with dogs or cats —Uruguay, Paraguay, Brazil, and Chile—, which in high season concentrate 90% of the demand. In the case of Uruguay, the digital process has particular importance: in addition to being the most frequent destination for those traveling with their pets from Argentina, one in three travelers already manages their CVI remotely.
The process is simple: the application must be initiated in the SENASA Pet System and the documentation submitted, which will be analyzed by SENASA within 72 business hours to verify that it complies with the requirements of the destination country. If everything is in order, upon payment of the coupons and accreditation of the receipts, the certificate arrives by email within the next 24 business hours, ready to download and present at official controls (printed or directly via smartphone).
Those traveling by land to or from Tierra del Fuego must have the Austral Veterinary Certificate (CVA) to cross Chilean territory. This document issued by the National Service certifies compliance with health certifications, rabies vaccination, and antiparasitic treatment of the animal.
It should be noted that this certificate is for exclusive use for traveling by land transit from Tierra del Fuego to another province or to enter the island, and does not allow entry and permanence in Chile. For that case, an International Veterinary Certificate (CVI) with destination Chile must be selected.
The CVA can also be processed digitally, by selecting Argentina–Chile–Argentina as the destination in the Pet System and uploading the required documentation, without the need to go to an office.
Beyond the chosen modality, the recommendation is always the same: plan the trip in advance, verify the requirements according to the destination and the type of pet, and choose a single way to manage the process, since initiating it through different channels can delay its resolution.
In case of any doubt, the agency provides its customer service channels to resolve queries before going in person to an office:
•Email: responde@senasa.gob.ar.
•WhatsApp: (11) 3585–9810.
• SENASA Offices – communication channels.
All information on requirements, costs, and modalities is available on the information portal for the transfer of dogs and cats.
