The training covered various aspects related to the prevention of and response to pollution incidents from ships, with a special emphasis on the International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Co-operation (OPRC 90), international cooperation mechanisms, and the different stages for the design, development, and implementation of contingency plans, including the equipment requirements necessary to face this type of emergency.
During the three weeks of training, participants exchanged knowledge, experiences, and best practices with instructors from the Institution and officials from different regions of the world, in a space for technical cooperation aimed at strengthening the capacities of maritime administrations in the face of potential emergencies that may affect the marine environment.
The completion of this activity represents a new milestone in the internationalization process of the Force's educational offerings, which continues to project its knowledge and capabilities beyond national borders and language barriers.
In this context, the training allowed for the consolidation of ties with professionals and maritime authorities from the Philippines, Comoros, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, India, Tanzania, Timor-Leste, Sri Lanka, Surinam, Barbados, among other participating States.
The initiative is part of the offer of six international courses in English presented by the Institution to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), with the aim of sharing capacities and experiences with officials from Maritime Administrations of Member States and contributing to the strengthening of international technical cooperation.
The activity was coordinated by the Force's Secretariat for International Affairs and included the participation of specialists from the Environmental Protection Directorate, reaffirming the institutional commitment to put its capabilities at the service of the international maritime community, strengthen technical cooperation, and contribute to the protection of the marine environment on a global scale.
