Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) announced the launch of a new Cruise Center of Excellence in Miami, aimed at connecting local clients with the classification society's global network of experts to support operators amid an increasingly complex market. The center was unveiled during the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Cruise Forward Summit 2026.
Scope of the center
The initiative brings together expertise in newbuilding design, vessel safety, emissions compliance and digital systems, serving as a local point of contact for shipowners and shipyards seeking technical support in design, construction and operations. Its areas of work include fire safety, lifeboat arrangement, evacuation analysis, smoke and fire spread simulations, as well as decarbonization strategies ranging from wind propulsion to bio-LNG capability, in addition to digitalization, cybersecurity and emerging technologies.
Statements
Alex Gregg-Smith, President of Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore, noted that cruise companies operate some of the most sophisticated businesses in the world, and that the launch of the center helps industry players tackle current challenges and shape future opportunities by connecting people, knowledge and capabilities across the organization.
Technical background
As a recent example of its capabilities in the cruise sector, BV cited the support it provided to MSC Cruises for the independent measurement and validation of actual onboard methane emissions on the MSC World Europa and MSC Euribia, in order to support flag state recognition and compliance with the FuelEU Maritime regulation. It also worked alongside Brittany Ferries and Adrena on a digital twin-based routing solution that demonstrated fuel savings of up to 6%.
The Orient Express Corinthian
BV was also involved in the construction of the Orient Express Corinthian, a 220-meter LOA vessel considered the world's largest sailing cruise ship, equipped with three rigid sails covering a total surface area of around 4,500 square meters. There, BV provided design review, construction supervision and noise and vibration measurement services. The new Miami center joins the specialized centers BV already operates in Doha, dedicated to gas, and in Singapore, Shanghai and Kuala Lumpur, focused on offshore operations, and will also integrate the group's expertise in ports, terminals and infrastructure.
