Wallenius Wilhelmsen, the Norwegian vehicle shipping and logistics group, secured two contracts worth more than US$1 billion with an equipment manufacturer it described as a long-standing partner. The agreements cover ocean transportation and logistics services over a three-year period.
Deal Details
According to the company's statement, the ocean transportation portion of the contract is valued at around US$950 million, while the logistics business contributes about US$100 million more. Freight rates under the new agreement are broadly similar to those of the previous three-year contract. The customer was not identified, and the company also did not disclose start dates or expected cargo volumes.
John Felitto, who recently became the company's chief customer officer, noted that the long-standing relationship with the manufacturer gives Wallenius Wilhelmsen deep insight into its transportation and logistics needs, and that the company's vessel network, available capacity and operational flexibility will support the customer's international supply chain.
A String of Industrial Contracts
The new agreement adds to a string of industrial and automotive contracts signed by the group. In January 2024, Wallenius Wilhelmsen had announced a three-year ocean transportation contract worth about US$1 billion with a construction and mining equipment manufacturer, effective from November 2023 with an option for a two-year extension; the company did not confirm whether the customer under the new contracts is the same one. During this year, the group also closed an early US$420 million extension with a European automaker in June, valid through mid-2031, a US$190 million automotive distribution renewal in March, and a US$130 million agreement with an Asian manufacturer of vehicles and heavy equipment in January.
Fleet Expansion
The contract announcement came a day after Wallenius Wilhelmsen confirmed an expansion of its shipbuilding program in China, with four 9,900 CEU liquefied natural gas-powered vessels at Jiangsu's Jinling shipyard, with an option for eight additional units. The firm vessels would be delivered starting mid-2030, while the optional units would follow in 2031 and 2032. The program could involve a total investment of around US$1.5 billion if all options are exercised, bringing the company's fleet renewal portfolio to 26 vessels, including options.
Trade news outlet, meanwhile, reported that Wallenius Wilhelmsen disclosed vehicle contracts with a combined value of US$1.7 billion, a figure higher than that reported by other sources for the same announcement.
