The company Nuevo Sistema Modular, S.L., awarded the project contract, has begun foundation works for the construction of the building that will house the new facilities of the Civil Guard's Citizen Security Unit (USECIC), on the North Bank quay of the Port of Santander. The project has a budget of 792,988 euros, a figure that sources also round to close to 793,000 euros, with an estimated execution period of six months.
Building Features
The new building will have a constructed area of 350 square meters, spread over two floors, and will be built using a modular construction system with prefabricated elements. Its layout includes workstations, changing rooms, restrooms, a meeting room, a rest area and storage facilities, spaces designed to meet the unit's operational needs.
Project Framework
The work stems from the agreement signed between the Secretariat of State for Security and the Port Authority of Santander (APS) to improve the Civil Guard's resources and facilities and strengthen its operational capacity within the port area. According to InfoPuertos, the project had been awarded to Nuevo Sistema Modular, S.L. last April, and the start of the foundation works marks the transition from that award to the physical execution of the project.
Statements by the APS Chairman
The Chairman of the Port Authority of Santander, César Díaz, noted that this project allows for continued progress in protecting port facilities, expanding and improving the resources devoted to surveillance of a strategic area where critical zones of movement of both people and goods converge. Díaz also highlighted the advantages of the chosen location, close to the buildings that the APS recently set up for the Maritime Service and the Civil Guard's Prosecutorial Section, which will foster coordination among units and enable a quicker response to potential incidents.
USECIC's Role
USECIC is a specialized rapid-intervention unit of the Civil Guard, whose duties include maintaining public safety, preventing crime, and addressing threats such as organized crime, drug trafficking and terrorism. Its routine deployment for checks and security patrols strengthens immediate response capacity within the port environment, complementing the work of the Port Police and units with maritime and prosecutorial responsibilities.
