Endesa and the Port of Seville today presented the new electrical infrastructure required to support future logistical and industrial developments planned for the right bank of the Port, such as projects in the Free Trade Zone linked to the aeronautical industry.
The presentation was attended by the President of the Port Authority of Seville, Rafael Carmona Ruiz, and the Director of Endesa in Andalusia, Extremadura, Ceuta, and Melilla, Rafael Sánchez Durán, along with the State Delegate for the Free Trade Zone of Seville, Carmen Tovar. They highlighted the importance of this agreement in strengthening and expanding the capacity of the electrical distribution network needed to meet a projected demand of 20 MW associated with new future developments in this port area.
Under the contract, the Port Authority of Seville and the Free Trade Zone will invest over 3 million euros in the project's development, while Endesa will undertake the design, processing, construction, and commissioning of the new facilities. These will provide sufficient electrical capacity for future business, logistical, and industrial initiatives outlined in the Port of Seville's planning.
The agreement also reflects a shared vision between both entities: the availability of electrical infrastructure and network capacity has become an essential element for attracting new industrial investment and enabling the energy transformation of major logistical hubs. Electrification, in this sense, is not only a tool for decarbonization but also a factor of competitiveness and economic development.
This contract adds to the one signed a year ago between both entities for the expansion of the Palmas Altas electrical substation, in which the port institution is investing over 5 million euros and Endesa is carrying out the construction of the facility. This new electrical infrastructure will favor port developments on the left bank of the dock, such as the urban port district of Seville and the establishment of new companies in the Cuarto dock, contributing to the boost of economic activity in the Port of Seville.
The designed technical solution includes actions in the Tablada and Torrecuéllar substations, from which future developments on the right bank will be supplied. Among the planned actions, the installation of a new 66/20 kV and 25 MVA transformer in the Torrecuéllar substation stands out, as well as the incorporation of new medium voltage positions and the adaptation of the control and operation systems associated with both facilities.
Likewise, the project contemplates the activation of five new medium voltage line outputs, two from the Tablada substation and three from Torrecuéllar, which will allow the network to be extended to the areas where future business and logistical activities of the port enclosure will be developed.
These actions are also integrated into the planning of electrical infrastructure in the port environment and are aligned with the future Seville Port 220/66 kV Substation, a strategic installation to reinforce the electricity supply and support the economic and industrial growth of the area. The commissioning of this latter, with its associated lines, is an indispensable condition for the energization of these new developments in the port area.
This contract represents a new step in the collaboration between the Port of Seville and Endesa to anticipate the energy needs derived from the growth of economic activity and the progressive electrification of industrial and logistical processes.
This capacity will also be crucial for progressively advancing the electrification of maritime and port activity, including the electrical supply of vessels during their stay in port through OPS (Onshore Power Supply) solutions, reducing the use of auxiliary engines and associated emissions while vessels remain berthed.
With this action, both entities reinforce their commitment to the sustainable development of the port area and to the creation of the necessary infrastructure to favor the arrival of new investments, boost business competitiveness, and accompany the transformation of the Port of Seville as a leading logistical and industrial hub in Southern Europe.
Since 2023, Endesa and the Port of Seville have been working on the design of an action plan to transform the Port of Seville into a greener and decarbonized port, based on the integration of sustainable mobility, renewable energy, energy storage, and the digitalization of processes through "open data" and distributed platforms, which will allow the Port of Seville to position itself at the forefront of this type of environment nationally and internationally.
To achieve this, the implemented work model includes actions regarding the electrification of ports through solutions for the decarbonization of maritime transport, energy produced and consumed through renewable sources, development of energy storage solutions, transformation of the electrical grid into a network capable of integrating distributed resources and scaling according to demand needs, and the development of charging infrastructure for all types of vehicles.
This transformation also opens the opportunity to evolve from individual energy actions towards port industrial communities, where companies can share infrastructure, renewable generation, storage, and energy management solutions, taking advantage of the existing complementarities between their production and consumption profiles. These industrial energy community models would allow energy to be produced, stored, managed, and consumed closer to demand, increasing overall efficiency and reinforcing the competitiveness of the installed companies.
Work is also underway on urban integration and the circular economy, promoting the use of alternative fuels, and digitalization through an intelligent management platform for all port resources and services. All of this with the key of open and collaborative participation between public and private entities that operate or are based in the Port of Seville itself.
