The Port Authority of Valencia (APV) has initiated procedures for the construction of a new electrical substation that will serve the Port of Valencia, as well as the companies and concessionaires operating within it. The infrastructure will have an installed capacity of 110 megawatts, through two 55-megawatt transformers.
This second high-voltage electrical substation, named ST Autoridad Portuaria de Valencia 2, will double the port's capacity to meet the growing energy demand of cargo terminals, logistics infrastructures, and new shore power connection systems for vessels (OPS). Furthermore, it represents a decisive step towards maximum operational reliability and environmental sustainability for the port.
This infrastructure has a budget of USD 18.2 million and is financed with the support of the European Commission through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
The new substation will allow the APV's power supply network in its northern area to be interconnected with the high-voltage distribution network. By having two independently operated substations connected via two separate feeder lines from the distribution company, the port ensures a maximum availability power supply security scheme.
Thus, in the event of potential grid failures, maintenance work, or extraordinary demand peaks on any of the incoming lines, the port's internal network will be able to switch and draw power from the second substation without interrupting activity at the terminals. This high reliability is crucial to prevent critical shutdowns of operational cranes and the supply of refrigeration for refrigerated cargo (reefer).
The new substation has been designed with sustainability and landscape integration criteria, in addition to incorporating GIS technology, which eliminates environmental pollution, since, being a sealed circuit free of discharges, it eliminates the risk of leakage of polluting fluids into the soil or sea. Furthermore, gas insulation prevents deterioration due to saline corrosion characteristic of the marine environment.
This technology also reduces the visual impact of the infrastructure, as the high-voltage equipment is entirely housed inside a closed building, integrating cleanly into the port environment without altering the landscape and minimizing noise pollution from the facilities.
Likewise, space is optimized by occupying up to 80% less surface area than an equivalent outdoor substation, freeing up valuable operational space for port logistics.
Valenciaport, through its Net Zero Emissions Plan, is committed to energy self-sufficiency, and is working to be able to produce all the energy it needs to meet the consumption associated with the economic and commercial activity of its various ports. This second substation not only consolidates the quality and continuity of its internal electrical grid but also enables the capacity required for the massive electrification of the port.
The measure will allow berthed ships to turn off their auxiliary engines and connect directly to the renewable onshore electricity grid, drastically reducing atmospheric emissions and noise pollution in the city's urban environment.
In this regard, the APV continues to develop its zero-emissions policy and is making a qualitative and quantitative leap in its energy network and the reliability of its systems, becoming one of the leading infrastructures in the Valencian Community.
