The Port of Barcelona has invested €591,000 (excluding VAT) in the purchase of two new vehicles and a tank container for the Barcelona Fire Department within the framework of the collaboration agreement between the Port of Barcelona and the Civil Protection, Prevention, Fire Extinction and Rescue Service of the Barcelona City Council. The handover ceremony for the trucks, which included speeches by the President of the Port of Barcelona, José Alberto Carbonell, and the Deputy Mayor for Security, Prevention, Coexistence and Internal Affairs of the Barcelona City Council, Albert Batlle, was held today at the Barcelona pier.
These are two heavy three-axle trucks, equipped with an articulated crane and a hydraulic system for loading and unloading the containers used by the Barcelona Fire Department in their operations within the port area. These vehicles incorporate improved features and capabilities compared to previous vehicles: more powerful and efficient engines; the ability to transport and handle heavier loads, and a working crane with greater reach and lifting capacity. In addition, the new trucks are equipped with the latest technology for this type of vehicle, such as sensors, 360º cameras, and greater control of the crane from inside and outside the cabin, elements that significantly improve safety and efficiency in the Fire Department's operations. The delivery of the tank container will take place during this month of June.
The acquisition of these two trucks and the tank container by the Port of Barcelona and their transfer to the Fire Department is part of the collaboration agreement between the Port Authority and the Civil Protection, Prevention, Fire Extinction and Rescue Service of the Barcelona City Council, which has just been extended until 2030.
This collaboration between the Port and the Barcelona City Council began in 1995 and is today an example of cooperation between institutions. The agreements signed to date have been agreements with a preventive focus and, at the same time, a guarantee that, in the event of an accident in the port area, the response will be rapid and effective, so that normal port activity can resume within a few hours, while ensuring the highest safety standards for citizens.
The current agreement, signed in 2022 and valid for four years, has been extended for another four years. The agreement has a maximum amount of 2,900,000 euros for the duration of this extension, of which 2.4 million euros will be allocated to vehicles and equipment and 500,000 euros to training. The training will focus on theoretical and practical knowledge regarding the peculiarities of the Port and the goods handled, and firefighting on board ships, both commercial and passenger.
