An official equipment reception ceremony was held at the Port of Guaymas, in Sonora, on September 21, 2026, for the Multipurpose Terminal operated by SSA México. This equipment was part of an investment of approximately 600 million Mexican pesos, according to ASIPONA Guaymas.
The equipment received included two post-Panamax gantry cranes for loading and unloading containers, two RTG yard cranes and reachstacker equipment. According to ASIPONA Guaymas, the projected increase in capacity would strengthen Sonora’s commercial connectivity with Asia-Pacific markets.
According to information released by the Government of Mexico in February 2026, the terminal was designed to handle containers, vehicles and general cargo. Its design included a quay measuring 329 meters, a depth of 16 meters and a yard covering five hectares.

The same presentation separately included the expansion project toward Guaymas-Empalme Bay, which envisaged developing 60 hectares in its first phase. An initial investment of 6,100 million Mexican pesos was announced for dredging and filling works.
According to that presentation, the design included a quay measuring up to 1,100 meters in length, with capacity to accommodate three vessels simultaneously, and a depth of 16 meters.
For the second and third phases, the plan called for a platform covering 108 hectares for the development of specialized terminals.
