A sudden explosion rocked an engineering vessel moored on the Yu River (Yujiang), in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China, on October 6 while painting work was underway. The blast killed one worker instantly and left two others missing. After several days of search operations, their bodies were recovered on October 8, raising the total death toll to three.
Location and Cause of the Accident
The vessel was moored along the natural riverbank in Hubiao Village, Xintang Town, Gangnan District, near Guigang. According to local authorities, workers were carrying out rust removal and spray painting operations in the vessel's hold and on deck. Preliminary assessments by authorities indicated that improper or non-standardized operating procedures by the work crew triggered the explosion.
Recovery of the Bodies and Injured Crew
In addition to the three fatalities, two other workers sustained minor injuries from the blast and remained under medical observation, with no risk to their lives, according to authorities. As cited by Safety4Sea from China Daily, the bodies of the two missing workers were found on October 8 at 04:20 and 09:08 local time, respectively.
Investigation and Background
Emergency, maritime, fire, police and health authorities were deployed to the scene following the incident, and an official investigation is still underway to determine the root causes of the explosion. The incident came weeks after another shipboard accident: a fire aboard the Ocean Melody during routine maintenance work at the Port of Qingdao on September 10, which caused 25 casualties.
