SC Ports to Suspend Leatherman Terminal Operations Amid Trade Pressures
South Carolina Ports will temporarily suspend container operations at Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal beginning August 1, consolidating services at Wando Welch and North Charleston terminals. The $1 billion facility, which opened in April 2021 as the first new U.S. container terminal since 2009, has faced significant challenges including a labor dispute with the International Longshoremen's Association that limited operations for more than three years. SC Ports characterized the move as a short-term consolidation rather than permanent closure.
