High-Speed Catamaran Sinks Off Cyprus: Eight Dead, 18 Missing
Eight people died when the high-speed catamaran Filo Jet sank off Diana Beach near northern Cyprus on 30 August after taking on water in rough weather. Of 267 people aboard—259 passengers and 8 crew—249 were rescued. Eighteen remain missing. The Turkey-flagged vessel sank to 514 metres depth. Search-and-rescue operations involving Turkish and Cypriot ships, helicopters, and coastguard units continued through the night. The cause remains unknown; authorities are recovering the black box recorder.
