Hanwha Expands U.S. Navy Shipbuilding Ambitions at Philadelphia Facility

Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao visited Hanwha Philly Shipyard to discuss expanding domestic naval shipbuilding capacity. Since acquiring the facility in late 2024, Hanwha has grown its Philadelphia workforce to nearly 2,500 employees and maintains a commercial backlog through 2029. The South Korean company has also made a preliminary $1.2 billion offer to acquire Austal USA and was selected to build the Missile Defense Agency's next-generation Missile Range Instrumentation Vessels, with the Golden Defender scheduled for delivery in 2030.
