The Mar del Plata Regional Port Consortium has recovered 1,407 linear meters of operational docks since the implementation of its comprehensive plan for the removal and scrapping of inactive vessels.
The latest milestone of this program allowed for the freeing up and reorganization of space in sections 5 and 6 of the Argentine terminal.
This was achieved after moving the hull of a 46-meter-long fishing vessel, abandoned for over 15 years, to the dry dock of the Mar del Plata Naval Base for its definitive dismantling.
The maneuver was a coordinated operation between the port administration, the military unit, and the Argentine Naval Prefecture on a vessel that had already undergone an initial stage of dismantling and cutting at the local docks.
Depending on the conditions of each unit evacuated under this initiative, the vessels are either transferred to other ports, reduced to scrap, or sunk to create artificial reefs in the Cristo Rey Submarine Park, off the coast of Mar del Plata.
"The recovery of operational space and the improvements undertaken with public works are fundamental for our port," remarked Marcos Gutiérrez, president of the Port Consortium, who highlighted the sustained effort to generate employment and ensure a safe, comfortable, and dynamic terminal.
