The Valenciaport Foundation launched a pilot project in the Port of Gandía to improve port water quality through the use of native macroalgae. The Bioremed Algae bioremediation system reduces nutrients, absorbs pollutants, and captures CO2 naturally, providing sustainable solutions for the logistics-port sector.
This activity is part of the European Treasure project (co-financed by the Interreg Euro-MED program), whose general objective is to improve environmental quality in Mediterranean port areas. Locally, the Valenciaport Foundation, in collaboration with the Port Authority of Valencia, leads this action through Opentop, Valenciaport's open innovation hub, which facilitates the development of pilot tests to validate new technologies.
The Bioremed Algae technology implemented in this pilot project was developed by the Alicante-based scaleup Mediterranean Algae. This solution consists of a modular biofilter installed in a shipping container that occupies barely 16 square meters on the dock, thus requiring no construction work in the port.
After its installation in mid-June, the system operates continuously, treating a flow of 6,000 liters of water per hour.
The heart of the system houses a cultivation system with native macroalgae of the Ulva genus (commonly known as sea lettuce), collected directly from the area. The system acts as a nature-based climate infrastructure, capable of treating water, reducing vectors such as excess nutrients (nitrates and phosphates) and pollutants, capturing CO2, and generating useful biomass, without the need to add any chemical additives to the water.
With this pilot, the Valenciaport Foundation reaffirms its commitment to the search for disruptive solutions for environmental challenges. Along with Valenciaport, the Treasure project has five other test scenarios in the Mediterranean: Tuscany, La Valleta, Piraeus, Bar, and Durres, all focused on European environmental innovation.
