The sheet piles, currently being unloaded at Raos 3 dock, were manufactured in Luxembourg by Arcelor Mittal and transported by sea from the port of Antwerp to the port of Santander.
César Díaz, president of the Port Authority of Santander (APS): "This infrastructure is essential to generate more berthing line and optimize port operations at public docks."
Santander, May 21, 2026. The president of the Port Authority of Santander (APS), César Díaz, highlighted this morning the "good progress" of the works on the new Raos 6 dock, reporting the arrival at the Port of the sheet piles necessary to build a combined wall system (combi wall).
"This infrastructure is one of the most important we currently have under execution, as it will allow us to increase the Port's capacity and optimize port operations at public docks," he explained.
The operation arises from the need to generate more berthing line for general cargo and solid bulk, following the significant increase in activity that has occurred at the North Raos Breakwater and the good progress of the container terminal.
The construction of the new dock represents an investment of 22.8 million euros, fully financed with the Port Authority of Santander's own resources, and is being executed by the joint venture formed by SIEC and SATO. The execution period is twenty months.
The work, included in the APS Investment Plan for the period 2025-2029, will serve, as Díaz explained, to "offer operators the possibility of streamlining their work as much as possible under optimal conditions of productivity and quality, in line with the efficiency objectives pursued by the port institution."
"Our goal is to continue being, together with the Government of Cantabria, a driving force for the regional economy, generating employment and business opportunities for companies in our hinterland," he concluded.
The Raos 6 project consists of the construction of a new 212-meter long multipurpose dock using a combined wall solution of sheet piles and steel profiles, anchored with tie rods to a micropiled cap, for a design draft of 12 meters deep.
This new infrastructure, which will be aligned with Raos 5, will allow solid bulk operations with discharge onto a hopper-truck, or in the front line with quick lifting, as well as general cargo.
