A delegation from Navantia Seanergies, led by its director, Javier Herrador, visited Port Tarragona to learn about the progress of its project to become a floating offshore wind hub in the western Mediterranean.
The meeting allowed for the presentation of the port's characteristics and its relationship with its area of influence, and a detailed explanation of the construction project for the second phase of the Moll de Balears, the dock that the port of Tarragona will dedicate to offshore wind activities. Navantia Seanergies representatives highlighted its strategic geographical location and the solidity of its project – which recently received 24 million euros from the PORT EOLMAR funds – as the main strengths for Tarragona to play a prominent role in the deployment of floating wind energy in the Mediterranean.
The President of Port Tarragona, Santiago J. Castellà, emphasized the relationship between the port and the company, aimed at advancing the deployment of floating offshore wind energy. "These types of visits allow us to strengthen our ties with leading companies in the sector while continuing to position ourselves as one of the ports in the western Mediterranean that offers the best conditions to be the logistical partner for a key emerging sector for Europe's energy transition," he pointed out.
For his part, the director of Navantia Seanergies, Javier Herrador, highlighted the "fundamental role of ports in the development of offshore wind energy" and reiterated the company's commitment to collaborating with them: "We are working with Spanish ports to share our experience in this market in order to help them with this new activity." Furthermore, Herrador positively assessed "Tarragona's strong commitment, with the expansion of the Moll de Balears, to contributing to the deployment of offshore wind energy." He also stressed Tarragona's strength to play a relevant role in the development of floating wind energy in the western Mediterranean and in Spain once the first floating wind farm auctions are finalized, which will favor the strengthening of industrial fabric and infrastructure.
This visit is part of the bilateral relations that Port Tarragona maintains with Navantia Seanergies within its strategy to position itself as a future floating offshore wind hub. Last September, a delegation from the port of Tarragona already visited the shipyard that the company has in Fene (A Coruña) to learn about its projects related to this business line.
The visit to Port Tarragona was complemented by a meeting at the facilities that the company Schwartz Hautmont, from Vilaseca, has within the port area. The meeting, led by its general director, Antonio Aldecoa, highlighted the technical capacity of the company located in the port for highly complex projects and its wide range of experience in the offshore sector.
During the visit, the expansion project for the Moll de Balears was presented in detail. The second phase of this infrastructure will involve a total public investment of 80 million euros, which will be financed with the Port Authority's own funds and with the 24 million euros obtained from the PORT EOLMAR funds. This is one of Port Tarragona's strategic projects for the coming years and is included in its Investment Plan, which foresees mobilizing 304 million euros until 2029.
Currently, the dock has an area of 4 hectares dedicated to cruise activity. With the construction of the second phase, this dock will add another 22 hectares, which will be allocated to operations related to floating offshore wind energy. The second phase of the dock will have an operational draft of 23.5 meters.
