The IMO Secretary-General, Arsenio Dominguez, condemned the new attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The situation stems from the end of the ceasefire between the United States and Iran, which led to commercial vessels being targeted by an Iranian offensive with a subsequent US response to Iranian positions.
"I regret having to speak out once again following attacks on merchant ships and innocent seafarers, due to geopolitical circumstances beyond their control. I condemn the attacks perpetrated in the last two days against several vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz," Dominguez said.
"These reckless attacks have once again put innocent seafarers in grave danger. No seafarer should have to risk their life simply by doing their job," he added.
"As long as the safety and security of crews cannot be guaranteed, I urge flag states, shipowners, operators, and all competent authorities to avoid exposing seafarers to unnecessary dangers when transiting the Strait," he further stated.
"The situation in the region remains unstable. These attacks further exacerbate the fear, uncertainty, and psychological tension already suffered by the nearly 6,000 seafarers who remain stranded aboard vessels unable to safely leave the Persian Gulf," he complemented.
"I call on all involved states to act with the utmost restraint, de-escalate the situation without delay, and facilitate the safe departure of vessels that remain trapped in the Gulf since the crisis began. The safety of seafarers must remain our highest priority," he concluded.
