US Supreme Court Rules Cruise Lines Can Be Sued Under Cuban Libertad Act
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled 8-1 that four cruise lines—Carnival Corporation, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, MSC Cruises, and Royal Caribbean Group—can be sued under the 1996 Libertad Act for using Havana's confiscated docks between 2016 and 2019. The Havana Dock Company, which originally built and operated the piers under a 99-year concession before the Cuban revolution, sought compensation for the nearly one million passengers transported using the seized property. The ruling sends the case back to lower courts for further proceedings.
