Kuwait summoned Iran's ambassador and delivered a formal note of protest over the attack perpetrated by Tehran against a Kuwaiti-linked oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, which left several crew members injured, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Arab Gulf country.
Deputy Foreign Minister Hamad Suleiman Al-Mashaan summoned Iranian Ambassador Mohammad Toutounchi following the aggression recorded on Monday, July 20, at night against the oil tanker Kaifan while it was transiting through this strategic maritime route, the foreign ministry detailed in a statement.
The attack caused injuries to several crew members, the note added, describing the incident as a "flagrant attack" perpetrated within the framework of an Iranian military escalation against the country that has been ongoing since February 28, 2026.
According to the statement, the aggression, coupled with "inflammatory and provocative statements from the Iranian side," constitutes a serious violation of Kuwait's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national interests.
Likewise, the Kuwaiti ministry indicated that the offensive threatens the security and freedom of international navigation, contravening international law, the United Nations Charter, and UN Security Council Resolution 2817 of 2026.
Kuwait reiterated its demand to Iran to immediately cease its "illegal attacks," emphasizing that it reserves the right to take all necessary measures in response.
The foreign ministry held Iran fully responsible for the attack on the oil tanker and for the continued aggression against Kuwaiti territory.
The incident occurs amid an intensification of aggressions against commercial navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy transport.
The United States has intensified its offensives against Iran since last week, to which Tehran has responded with bombings of facilities and bases that, it claims, the US military uses in several countries in the region.
This exchange of fire between Washington and Tehran occurs despite the memorandum of understanding mediated by Pakistan and signed in June, with which both parties sought to end the war and reach a lasting peace agreement.
