A tanker had been boarded by the suspected pirates in the Gulf of Aden on 17 July, prompting an international naval response off the coast of Yemen.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported the vessel was boarded by unauthorised personnel approximately 65 nautical miles south of Al Mukalla, Yemen, en route to Bosaso Port in Somalia.
British Maritime Security Firm Ambrey identified the vessel as Asana that issued the distress call at around 06:20 GMT on Friday with no security team onboard. Following the distress call, a South Korean warship and the European Union's Aspides naval mission responded and are working to assist the Asana and assess the situation.
The authorities have not yet reported the number of unauthorised personnel aboard the tanker and the condition of crew.
Asana is a 1992-built Oil/Chemical Tanker and is sailing under the flag of Tanzania. The vessel measures 127.2 meters in length and 17.92 meters in width.
