Westwell, a provider of AI-powered intelligent logistics solutions, delivered 60 new-generation smart electric terminal tractors, equipped with a swappable battery system (SBS) and a battery swapping station (BSS), to Westports Malaysia, where the vehicles are already in the commissioning and operational integration phase.
Located along the Strait of Malacca, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, Westports is Malaysia's largest container terminal and a key hub connecting East Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
Driven by high transshipment volumes, extensive global port connectivity and shipping networks, as well as continuous improvements in terminal automation and yard optimization, Westports handled 11.3 million TEUs in 2025, 3.2% more than the previous year, according to the Malaysian Ministry of Transport. Meanwhile, the port is advancing an expansion project that will add 4.8 kilometers of new quay, increasing its annual handling capacity from 14 million TEUs to 27 million TEUs.
The arrival of the fleet, followed by immediate on-site charging and commissioning, marks a significant milestone for the project and lays the groundwork for rapid delivery, with commercial operations scheduled to begin by the end of August. Once deployed, the fleet of terminal tractors is expected to significantly improve the terminal's operational efficiency, reduce operating costs associated with high fuel prices, and enhance driver comfort and well-being.
To ensure continuity of terminal operations, the fleet will be equipped with Westwell's intelligent PowerOnair battery swapping system, which allows fully automated battery replacement in approximately five minutes. The vehicles have also received enhanced protection against corrosion and salt spray, ensuring reliable operation in Malaysia's tropical climate, characterized by high temperatures, heavy rainfall, and coastal humidity.
