Wärtsilä will supply various propulsion solutions for nine new ferries under construction for the Grimaldi Group fleet.
The vessels are being built at China Merchants Heavy Industry (Weihai) Shipyard Co., Ltd., as part of Grimaldi's significant fleet renewal program, focused on achieving decarbonized maritime operations.
Four units will be allocated to Grimaldi Lines, three to Finnlines, and two to Minoan Lines. Wärtsilä received orders for engines, propulsion systems, and scrubbers in 2025. The order for the hybrid electric system for the Finnlines vessels was placed in the first quarter of 2026.
The nine vessels will operate with Wärtsilä's highly efficient and fuel-flexible 46F engines. Designed to deliver optimal performance today while keeping fuel options open as regulations and the availability of alternative fuels evolve, these engines are capable of running on sustainable fuels such as methanol.
Additionally, the Finnlines vessels will benefit from a comprehensive hybrid electric system designed to increase propulsion efficiency, reduce fuel consumption, and ensure reliable and sustainable operations. Wärtsilä will also supply two gearboxes, two controllable pitch propellers (CPP) with shafts, and a ProTouch propulsion remote control system.
Together, this fully integrated power and propulsion system will improve overall efficiency, generate significant fuel savings, and contribute to reducing emissions from the Finnlines vessels.
"Ferry operators face demanding operational requirements, from availability and efficiency to compliance with emissions regulations on variable routes. Thanks to close collaboration with Grimaldi Group, we have adopted a truly integrated approach to meet these needs. We will offer future-proof solutions through engines capable of running on different fuels, along with comprehensive packages of innovative low-emission technologies, to support the operational performance of these vessels today while providing them with flexibility for the future," stated Roger Holm, President of Wärtsilä Marine and Executive Vice President of Wärtsilä Corporation.
Finnlines RoPax ferries cover the Helsinki (Finland) – Travemünde (Germany) route. Minoan Lines is one of the main passenger ferry operators in Greece, while Grimaldi Lines offers maritime connections in Sardinia, Sicily, Spain, Greece, and Tunisia.
Wärtsilä will deliver the equipment for the nine ferries between 2026 and 2028.
