The Chilean company Easter Island Naviera is looking to open a second maritime route between Chile and the Malvinas or Falkland Islands. In this context, company representatives visited the archipelago to hold a dozen meetings with local businesses. Likewise, presentations were made to members of the local chamber of commerce.
Should the meetings and subsequent follow-up generate sufficient interest, Easter Island Naviera could finalize its business plan and potentially begin operating a monthly service between Punta Arenas, Chile, and the aforementioned island territory.
"There is clear interest from Chile in re-establishing a commercial maritime connection with the Falkland Islands. The visit by Easter Island Naviera and the positive response from the Falkland Islands business community clearly demonstrate the seriousness with which this project is being pursued," said Sam Cockwell, Strategic Projects Manager at Falkland Islands Development Corporation (FIDC).
The Chilean company's visit was organized and facilitated by FIDC, as part of the organization's growing collaboration with the British Chamber of Commerce in Chile and the reciprocal presences of trade delegations organized by FIDC during 2024 and 2025.
"The visit of a business delegation from Chile, and the visit of the FIDC-led delegation to Punta Arenas and Santiago, significantly boosted the transformation of this simple 'good idea' into a real opportunity. FIDC detected interest from Chile and worked to link that opportunity with as many businesses as possible in the Falkland Islands. I believe we saw that reflected in the visit of Easter Island Naviera," commented Zachary Franklin, CEO of FIDC.
In addition to using the visit to determine the type of cargo that the Falkland Islands business community seeks to send through Chile, according to Easter Island Naviera, the company also took the opportunity to analyze options for exporting materials to Chile, including scrap metal.
Easter Island Naviera currently provides all logistical and maritime support between mainland Chile and Rapa Nui - also known as Easter Island - as well as cargo transport services from Valparaíso to other areas of the country.
