An Evergreen container ship was reportedly struck by a projectile while sailing through the Strait of Hormuz. The vessel became the latest target of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), according to two senior U.S. officials who spoke to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).
The attack on the Singapore-flagged vessel occurred 7.5 nautical miles southeast of Dahit, Oman, according to a report issued by UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). Damage to the bridge was reported, but no casualties or environmental impact were confirmed.
In line with the communication, the aggression took place just hours after the Iranian paramilitary navy warned vessels not to use routes through waterways that did not have their authorization.
Despite the incident, maritime risk management firm Vanguard indicated that the container ship, identified as the Ever Lovely, measuring 335 meters in length and 46 meters in beam, continued through the Strait of Hormuz despite the damage.
According to BBC, the ship tracking site MarineTraffic reported that the vessel had entered the waterway using the southern route on Thursday, June 25, in the morning and exited on the eastern side around 3:30 PM local time. Vanguard also reported that no assistance was required.
Previously, the United States and Iran agreed to end hostilities under a 14-point agreement, which also required Iran to make its "best efforts for the safe passage of commercial vessels free of charge for 60 days."
However, Tehran has repeatedly stated that it plans to charge what it calls maritime service fees for crossing the strait, unlike tolls.
In this context, it is worth mentioning that the Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) stated that "in response to repeated inquiries. Any transit through routes outside the framework established by PGSA will not be covered by the guarantee of safe passage and will not enjoy insurance coverage or associated liabilities. The consequences arising from transit through unauthorized routes will fall on the owner, operator, and commander of the vessel."
On Friday, June 19, the PGSA issued an official notice requiring all vessels to mandatorily register their transit requests through the Strait of Hormuz, which was due to "the presence of mine-affected areas and the need to ensure safe transit and prevent collisions."
It should be noted that the PGSA is an agency of the Iranian government with the mandate to authorize and regulate maritime transit through the Strait of Hormuz after contact with the authority.
