Global Ship Lease has agreed to a series of shipbuilding contracts for five medium-sized, ultra-refrigerated, wide-beam, state-of-the-art containerships for a total purchase price of $413 million.
Following their delivery from the respective shipyards, scheduled for 2029, the vessels will enter into multi-year charters with a TEU-weighted average term of 8.1 years and at rates expected to generate an aggregate adjusted EBITDA of $362 million.
George Yourukos, Executive Chairman of Global Ship Lease, stated that "as with the 10 vessels we announced earlier this month, we believe these five additional premium vessels are ideally positioned to serve as pillars of the global container shipping fleet for many years to come. Charter extension options, at rates more than 25% higher than those for the initial firm periods, suggest that charterers share our confidence in the long-term commercial value and earnings potential of these vessels."
"The needs of global container trade are increasingly complex and variable, which places greater importance on the combination of deployment flexibility, refrigerated cargo capacity, and fuel efficiency that these vessels offer our liner customers. As some of the most profitable vessels in GSL's fleet begin to age, the addition of these new vessels with multi-year charters will not only significantly reduce the average age of our fleet but also provide us with a substantially extended cash-generating runway for decades to come," the executive added.
These five newbuild vessels bring the company's newbuild order book to 15 units, which are collectively expected to generate over $1 billion in EBITDA.
