Manzanillo, Col., June 4, 2026. As part of the Local Contingency Plan Committee for Hydrocarbon Spills and Potentially Hazardous Substances in Mexican Marine Zones at the facilities of the Sixth Naval Region, and in its capacity as an assisting agent, the National Port System Administration Manzanillo (ASIPONA Manzanillo) has actively participated in the response and mitigation actions for an iridescent slick detected during the early morning of June 2nd in Manzanillo Bay.
From the first report, ASIPONA joined an inter-institutional coordination led by the Sixth Naval Region of the Secretariat of the Navy (SEMAR), and in collaboration with the Pacific Naval Force (FUERNAVPA), the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) in Manzanillo, the H. City Council of Manzanillo, PEMEX, the Regional Port Captaincy in Manzanillo, the Naval Port Protection Unit (UNAPROP), the Pacific Oceanographic Institute, as well as the companies OCUPA, SSA México, and Hazesa; with the objective of containing, monitoring, and immediately addressing the incident.
For these tasks, ASIPONA Manzanillo deployed 27 personnel from the Ecology, Operations, Protection, and Maritime Traffic areas, as well as two vehicles, drones, one vessel, 270 meters of floating boom, 30 kilograms of biodegradable detergent, pressure washers, and various specialized equipment for the containment, monitoring, and mitigation of the iridescent slick.
Thanks to the coordinated work among the participating institutions, approximately 98 percent of the iridescent slick has been recovered and collected, minimizing its impact on the marine environment.
As part of the follow-up measures, permanent monitoring will continue in the coming hours through drone overflights every two hours and patrols by specialized vessels. Likewise, containment booms will remain installed as a preventive measure.
Similarly, corresponding inspections were carried out within PEMEX facilities; however, no evidence has been found so far to identify the origin of the observed substance.
The competent authorities, particularly SEMARNAT and PROFEPA, will continue with the necessary investigations to determine the source of the spill and evaluate the conditions after this event.
ASIPONA Manzanillo, as part of the Secretariat of the Navy, reiterates its commitment to environmental protection, the safety of port operations, and permanent collaboration with authorities at all three levels of government to timely address any situation that could affect the maritime and port environment.
