The Board of Directors of the Panama Canal Authority has appointed engineer Ilya Espino de Marotta as administrator of the Panama Canal for the 2026-2033 period, exercising the powers conferred upon it by the Political Constitution of the Republic of Panama and the Organic Law of the Panama Canal Authority.
The decision is the result of a national and international process of searching, consulting, and evaluating profiles of Panamanian professionals, aligned with the present and future challenges of the Canal. This methodology included rigorous capacity and knowledge tests, as well as in-depth interviews aimed at comprehensively evaluating the candidates' competencies, strategic vision, and leadership.
"The legitimacy of this decision is based on the independence of the process, the technical rigor of the method applied, and a serious, objective institutional deliberation oriented towards the best interest of the Canal and the country. As in previous appointments, the Board of Directors undertook this process with full awareness of the relevance of our Canal for Panama and for world trade," said Jose Ramón Icaza, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Panama Canal Authority.
Engineer Espino de Marotta possesses the experience, judgment, and capabilities to lead the Canal through major challenges: water sustainability, route competitiveness, institutional modernization, operational efficiency, and the preservation of the Canal's contribution to national development.
The new administrator is a marine engineer graduated from Texas A&M University, with a Master's in Economic Engineering from the Universidad Santa María La Antigua and executive training at INCAE and Kellogg School of Management. Furthermore, she is a distinguished professional of the Panama Canal with over 40 years of experience in technical, operational, and leadership areas, having served as Deputy Administrator and Chief Sustainability Officer. She has led high-impact strategic projects, including the Canal expansion program, as well as key initiatives in water management, sustainability, and modernization, standing out for her ability to manage complex projects and represent the institution internationally.
In her words, engineer Marotta stated: "I thank God for this opportunity presented to me. Thanks to the Board of Directors for this vote of confidence and for giving me this privilege to continue contributing to my country. I commit to continuing to do my best for our country, supporting our clients, and ensuring the strategic planning we have so that Panama continues to grow. I extend my deep gratitude to my family for these 40 years of service, and I will continue to offer all that I am to the Panama Canal workforce."
Minister Icaza added that "the selection of a professional from within the institution's own ranks reaffirms the solidity of its organizational culture, the strength of its training and succession processes, and the Canal's ability to develop leaders prepared to take on the strategic challenges of the interoceanic waterway and continue contributing to the well-being and development of our country."
The Board of Directors recognized the work of the current administrator, Dr. Ricaurte Vásquez Morales, who has led the Canal during a period of extraordinary challenges: a water crisis, a global pandemic, international logistical disruptions, and geopolitical tensions that altered world trade routes. His management leaves a financially robust, competitive Canal fully capable of undertaking the projects planned in the strategic plan.
Furthermore, the Board of Directors reiterated its message of confidence to the Canal's collaborators, its clients, the international maritime community, and above all, to all Panamanians: the Panama Canal maintains its institutional strength, operational continuity, and its commitment to the country, to world trade, and to the excellence that has distinguished it worldwide.
In the coming days, the process of an orderly, institutional transition will begin, in accordance with established times and procedures.
