The National Port Authority (APN), an entity attached to the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), granted port authorization to the company Horizonte de Verano for the development of a green hydrogen port project to be executed with an investment of 540 million dollars.
APN detailed that the integral project includes a plant that will produce green hydrogen and ammonia. The distinguishing feature of this ammonia, compared to that obtained from hydrocarbons, is that through this process, ammonia is obtained from seawater and air, without CO2 emissions.
For its production, exclusively renewable energy, such as solar and wind, will be used, it added.
It specified that the first stage consists of two single-buoy moorings and underwater pipelines, and will also have a maritime terminal with an ammonia storage system located on the coast. It will feature thermally insulated tanks to store this compound at cryogenic temperatures, in addition to a system of submarine pipelines for supplying ammonia to tanker vessels and a desalination plant.
The estimated integral investment for the Horizonte de Verano project is 540 million dollars, which will be developed in five stages. The first stage is expected to involve an investment of 120 million dollars and come into operation by the end of 2029.
