The Ministry of Production (Produce) has authorized the start of the second fishing season for anchovy and white anchovy in the southern zone of the country, which will run from July 1 to December 31 of this year or until the established maximum catch quota is reached.
The measure, formalized by Ministerial Resolution N° 000185-2026-PRODUCE published today in the Official Gazette El Peruano, covers the maritime area located between 16° south latitude and the southern end of the Peruvian maritime domain.
Furthermore, a Total Allowable Catch Limit (TAC) of 251,000 tons has been established for the extraction of anchovy and white anchovy intended for indirect human consumption, a volume that may be modified based on biological, fishing, or environmental conditions supported by the Peruvian Marine Research Institute (Imarpe).
The regulation states that the season may conclude before the scheduled date if the authorized quota is reached. In addition, the closing date may also be modified, following a technical report from Imarpe, when biological or environmental conditions require it.
The decision is based on Imarpe's technical recommendation, which proposed maintaining a quota for the second half of the year equivalent to half of the annual catch limit of 502,000 tons for the southern stock, under a precautionary approach due to the presence of juvenile specimens and the oceanographic context associated with the El Niño phenomenon.
The ministerial resolution also provides for conservation and oversight measures to protect the resource, including the temporary closure of areas with a high incidence of juveniles, permanent monitoring of extractive activity, and the mandatory use of the Satellite Tracking System (SISESAT) on authorized vessels.
