A Wan Hai Lines container ship, only two years old, called at a Chilean port for the first time, making its inaugural call at San Antonio International Terminal (STI). The vessel arrived from Callao, Peru, as part of the Asia-South America II (AS2) service route.
The milestone was set by the Wan Hai A17 - 335 meters long, 51 meters wide, and 122,045 deadweight tons - at Berth N°2, operated by the concessionaire of the Port of San Antonio. It will perform 900 container movements, with 500 for loading and 400 for unloading.
The vessel, launched in August 2024 from the facilities of Samsung Heavy Industries, will remain in the port until the morning of Sunday, August 9. The unit will then depart for Ningbo, China.
The Wan Hai A17, with a capacity to move 13,100 TEU and registered under the flag of Singapore, is the tenth container ship out of a total of 13 units ordered by the Taiwanese shipping company in 2021 from the South Korean shipyard.
It should be noted that the vessel was involved in a collision in October 2025 while navigating the Lingding Channel in the Pearl River estuary, China. Following the incident, Wan Hai Lines confirmed that the vessel suffered structural damage to its bow.
According to the case details, the incident occurred after the bulk carrier Hai Li 5 suffered a propulsion failure while covering the route between Guangzhou and Shanghai, losing control and colliding with the Wan Hai A17.
