Wilson Sons, a port and maritime logistics operator with over 188 years of experience, christened the WS Ariel at Mauá Pier in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is the third high-power tugboat in the company's new shipbuilding series.
Like the WS Halcyon and WS Capella, launched in January and May of this year, respectively, the WS Ariel was built at Wilson Sons' shipyard in Guarujá, São Paulo.
The vessel belongs to the ASD 2312 class, is 23 meters long and 12 meters wide, features azimuthal propulsion, a bollard pull of 73.5 tons, and is capable of assisting the largest vessels operating in Brazil with docking and undocking maneuvers.
"Its modern design, combined with optimized propulsion and efficient hull hydrodynamics, reduces fuel consumption and emissions compared to similar vessels. Versatile, the WS Ariel also features a FiFi 1 firefighting system with a capacity of 2.4 million liters of water per hour. The new tugboats are part of Wilson Sons' strategy to modernize and expand its fleet, which will now comprise 83 vessels operating along the Brazilian coast," the company announced.
Márcio Castro, Executive Director of Towage at Wilson Sons, stated that "this new cycle of tugboats reinforces our commitment to safer, more efficient, and sustainable operations. They are prepared to serve increasingly larger vessels and contribute to the efficiency of the logistics chain and the development of the Brazilian port sector in Brazil."
Meanwhile, the Executive Director of Wilson Sons Shipyard, Adalberto Souza, highlighted the company's investments in technology and the great maneuverability of the 2312 class tugboats. "Greater maneuverability allows tugboats to operate closer to the bow and stern of vessels. In addition to supporting large vessels, such as New Panamax ships, they are versatile and prepared to operate in multiple ports," he added.
With the WS Ariel, Wilson Sons has built 156 vessels at its shipyard, which boasts over 80 years of history.
