Ecuador implemented the ePhyto digital phytosanitary certification system for agricultural exports destined for the European Union as of October 1st. The measure eliminates the use of paper certificates and modernizes foreign trade procedures, in coordination with Agrocalidad and the European Commission.
In 2025, Ecuadorian agricultural exports to the European market exceeded $3.39 billion in FOB value, with approximately 39,000 certificates issued annually. Among the main exported products are bananas and other musaceae, cocoa beans, flowers, wood, and pitahaya, destined for markets such as the Netherlands, Germany, and Italy.
The digital transmission of documents will streamline customs procedures, reduce waiting and inspection times at destination ports, and lower operational costs for exporters. Furthermore, the early exchange of information will facilitate sanitary controls and contribute to strengthening the efficiency and competitiveness of the agricultural export logistics chain.
