Puertos del Estado and 15 port authorities are participating from tomorrow until October 8 in the main global fruit and vegetable sector fair, with the aim of opening new markets and consolidating Spanish ports as the great logistics platform for international fresh produce trade.
"Spain is a global agri-food power and one of the main food exporters in the EU. Participating in the Fruit Attraction fair allows our country to showcase the strength of the port system as a great logistics platform for the global fresh produce trade. Spanish ports guarantee safety in conservation conditions, traceability, and compliance with demanding deadlines typical of the sector," highlights the president of Puertos del Estado, Gustavo Santana.
In 2025, ports of general interest handled 10.26 million tons of fruits and vegetables. In the first eight months of this year, the figure has reached 7.98 million tons.
With more than 2,500 exhibitors and an expected visit of more than 121,000 professionals from 150 countries, Fruit Attraction gains importance as the international reference fair in the fruit and vegetable sector, an opportunity to share the latest technological advances and boost commercial activity.
Under the claim "Moving the best of nature," the Ports of Spain stand, led by Puertos del Estado, has 215 m2, where the 15 participating ports (Alicante, Bahía de Algeciras, Bahía de Cádiz, Barcelona, Bilbao, Cartagena, Castellón, Huelva, Las Palmas, Málaga, Motril, Sevilla, Tarragona, Valencia, and Vigo) will hold an extensive agenda of work meetings and showcase the competitive advantages of choosing their cold networks and international connectivity for the transport of fruits and vegetables.
On Tuesday, the president of Puertos del Estado, Gustavo Santana, will welcome attendees from the Ports of Spain stand at 13:00 h. On Wednesday, at the same location, at 11:00 h., the presentation of the Port of Valencia: "Valenciaport: where fresh connects," will take place, led by Mar Chao, president of the Autoridad Portuaria de Valencia.
Next, in the Fruit Next 4 space, in Pavilion 4, at 12:00 h., the round table organized by Puertos del Estado "Innovation in the cold chain: the strategic role of ports" will be held, moderated by Pedro García Navarro, Director of Operations of Puertos del Estado, and with the participation of Andima Ormaetxe, Director of Operations of the Autoridad Portuaria de Bilbao; Jaime Manuel Beltrán, Head of Business Development and Commercial Area of the Autoridad Portuaria de Huelva; and Ignasi Sayol, CEO of Inprous; to address the latest innovations in infrastructure and sustainable solutions in global trade.
Spain is the leading country in Europe in maritime connectivity, with more than 200 connections with ports worldwide. In addition, Spanish ports have highly specialized facilities and infrastructure, incorporating the latest technological developments: almost 100 million m2 of land area and storage areas, more than 2 million m3 in refrigerated warehouses, reefer connections, advanced temperature control technology, and almost 395,000 linear meters of berthing.
Among the digital solutions promoted by Puertos del Estado, the following stand out: DUEPORT, the port single window that centralizes and facilitates the exchange of information and the management of procedures associated with ship calls, and its adaptation to the European Maritime Single Window environment (EMSWe); INTEGRA2, which allows for improved internal process management between different port systems and actors; and SIMPLE, a logistics information exchange platform that facilitates interoperability, traceability, and coordination of the different agents in the transport chain. Special mention should be made of VUAPORT, an application for managing positioning and inspections at Border Control Posts, whose objective is to streamline and optimize inspection processes and the coordination of the different agents involved in border goods control.
In the field of fuels, state-owned ports are immersed in the deployment of OPS (Onshore Power Supply) systems that allow berthed vessels to connect to the onshore electricity grid and turn off their auxiliary engines, reducing noise and polluting emissions. Currently, Spain is also positioned as a reference hub in Europe in the production and distribution of cleaner fuels, excelling in the supply of LNG to ships.
Finally, it is worth highlighting Puertos del Estado's promotion of maritime-rail intermodality, which allows Spain to improve its global competitiveness with reduced waiting times and faster transport between ports and the final destination of goods, thus guaranteeing the arrival of perishable refrigerated foods in perfect condition.
