The Board of Directors of the Port Authority of Vigo analyzed today at its meeting the traffic balance for the month of August, a period that closed as the best August in the history of the Vigo terminal after registering growth of over +11.5%.
As the President of the Port Authority, Carlos Botana, emphasized at a press conference after the Board of Directors meeting, "these results demonstrate the solidity of our industries and the operational capacity of our port community, which continues to respond professionally in a very complicated global context like the one we are experiencing."
During August, the increase was generalized across the main economic and industrial indicators. Cargo traffic advanced by +13.3%, driven by general cargo (+15%). The strong performance of frozen fish stands out, growing by +15% to exceed 63,000 tons, as well as the rebound in fresh fish, which rose by +4% after the +6.2% increase registered in July. Likewise, fruit (+103%) and canned goods (+69%) traffic surged, while vehicle movement at the Bouzas Terminal grew by +11%.
In the maritime sector, TEUs increased by +4.5%. The average size of vessels (+10%) and the number of cruise passengers (+11%) also increased. With these figures, the year-to-date total is close to 3.5 million tons of cargo and reaches 210,632 TEUs.
Advancing towards Decarbonization and a Green Port
Within the framework of the Blue Growth strategy and the port institution's commitment to energy transition, the Board of Directors approved the concession to Iberdrola for the installation of ten electric vehicle charging points in the service area. Six charging spaces will be enabled in Bouzas (next to the football field), two in the vicinity of the CSIC, and another two on Avenida de Orillamar.
In this regard, Botana emphasized that sustainability is an indispensable pillar: "It's not just about growing in volume and tons, but about doing so cleanly and efficiently. The implementation of this electric charging network is another step on our path towards decarbonization and our firm commitment to consolidate Vigo as a green, self-sufficient, and emission-neutral port." He also recalled that the organization continues to work on the implementation of renewable energies in all buildings and facilities of the Port of Vigo.
Finally, he highlighted his recent participation in the FAO Committee on Fisheries (COFI), held in Rome, where he took part in the space dedicated to the Blue Ports Initiative, integrating the official Spanish delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA), and where Vigo was an example of a Blue Port.
As he recalled, the Port Authority of Vigo, together with Puertos del Estado, the Consellería do Mar, and the General Secretariat of Fisheries, have been key in the development of this Initiative since its inception, providing financial support since 2024 and collaborating closely in knowledge exchange.
