The Balearic Islands Port Authority (APB) has presented the second edition of its Solidarity Race, an initiative that will transform the weekend of November 14th and 15th into an open gathering for citizens around sports, solidarity, and participation.
The presentation commemorated World Mental Health Day, a date especially linked to the solidarity cause of this edition, Teléfono de la Esperanza. The proceeds from registrations for the 10K and 4K races, which cost 10 euros, will be entirely donated to this organization. This year, the NGO is developing a training and awareness program for APB employees on emotional health and suicide prevention.
Javier Sanz, president of the APB, highlighted during the presentation that the race "allows us to unite sports, solidarity, and citizenship in such an emblematic space as the Port of Palma," and noted that the objective is to consolidate this initiative as an annual event open to people of all ages.
A Saturday dedicated to sports and solidarity
The program will kick off on Saturday, November 14th, in Santo Domingo de la Calzada square, which will host an exhibition fair with the participation of different entities and organizations linked to sports, health, and solidarity. Attendees will be able to learn about their activities and projects.
Throughout the day, various guided sports activities will also be offered, free and open to all audiences, in addition to recreational proposals for the little ones. The program includes bachata, V-Fight, salsa, body balance sessions, a swing exhibition and workshop, and a zumba session.
On the same Saturday, participants registered for Sunday's events will be able to collect their bib numbers and t-shirts. The organization reminds that on Sunday, November 15th, bib numbers cannot be collected, nor can new registrations be made.
Sunday 15: races for all ages
Sunday, November 15th, will be the day for the different sports events. The exhibition fair will remain open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and, before the races, there will be a guided warm-up between 9:30 a.m. and 9:50 a.m.
Children's races will start at 10:00 a.m. and will be adapted to different ages. There will be 1,400-meter races for children aged 12 and 13, 800-meter races for participants aged 9 to 11, 400-meter races for children aged 5 to 8, and a 200-meter introductory race for the youngest, aged 0 to 4, accompanied by their parents or guardians.
At 11:00 a.m., the 10K adult race will start, for participants aged 16 and over. The route will start and finish in Santo Domingo de la Calzada square and will allow runners to pass through the Ponent-Paraires docks, as well as cover different sections of the Paseo Marítimo.
At 12:30 p.m., the 4K race and the 4K Popular Walk will begin. The latter is designed as an alternative for those who want to participate in the sports and solidarity day without competing.
A day to participate in different ways
With this program, the APB wants the Solidarity Race to be an initiative open to all audiences and for participation to go beyond the races themselves. Families, athletes, organizations, and citizens will be able to join the day in different ways, either by participating in the races, the walk, the sports activities, or by learning about the work of the participating organizations.
Registrations for the 10K and 4K races cost 10 euros per bib number, and the proceeds will be entirely donated to Teléfono de la Esperanza. Children's races and the popular walk are free.
The APB thus gives new impetus to an initiative that in its first edition brought together more than 2,100 participants and that this year expands its program to offer a full weekend of activity, gathering, and solidarity in the Port of Palma.
