Castelló PortLab Organizes Technical Visit to Portsur on Port Energy Transition

The Castelló PortLab External Innovation Commission conducted a technical visit to Portsur, involving seventeen entities from the port ecosystem. Attendees learned about projects related to quay electrification, renewable energies, and energy efficiency, including a photovoltaic plant and Spain's first electrified mobile crane directly connected to the quay's electrical grid. This activity marks the beginning of the 2026/27 program for the External Innovation Commission, which comprises 28 organizations.

The Castelló PortLab External Innovation Commission has promoted a technical visit to Portsur's facilities, as part of the workshop "Efficient Port: the future of energy terminals," to explore the keys to energy transition in ports from the perspective of port operations.

The technical day, held last week, was attended by around seventeen entities from the port ecosystem, all members of Castelló PortLab, where they were able to learn 'in situ' about projects linked to quay electrification, renewable energies, and energy efficiency.

The visit allowed attendees to gain first-hand knowledge of the terminal's operations and contextualize some of the main challenges facing the sector in areas such as electrification, the incorporation of renewable energies, and the improvement of energy efficiency.

The energy transition seen from port operations

During the tour of the terminal's facilities, Portsur representatives presented the different projects and initiatives they are developing in the field of energy transition.

Among the highlighted actions, the photovoltaic plant installed on the roof of their warehouses was presented, as well as the electrified mobile crane for handling solid bulk, which attendees had the opportunity to see up close and even climb into. This is the first crane of its kind in Spain that operates directly connected to the quay's electrical grid.

A community that shares experiences and capabilities

The session concluded with a brief space dedicated to the presentation of the companies that are part of the External Innovation Commission.

The meeting facilitated connection between port companies, energy companies, technological agents, universities, and other organizations linked to the innovation ecosystem, creating a conducive environment for detecting common interests and future collaboration opportunities.

This action is the first activity of the 2026/27 program of the External Innovation Commission, which seeks to reinforce practical orientation through technical visits, workshops, business experiences, and co-creation dynamics, bringing the discourse to the environment in which port activity takes place to foster the exchange of experiences and points of view among organizations with diverse profiles and capabilities.

Shared innovation to advance towards a more efficient port

With this event, Castelló PortLab begins a new cycle of activities aimed at connecting the real challenges of the port ecosystem with the knowledge and capabilities of the 28 organizations that are already part of the Castelló PortLab External Innovation Commission.

The energy transition opens this journey by focusing on one of the main future challenges for the sector: advancing towards more efficient and sustainable operations without losing sight of competitiveness and the real needs of companies.

Upcoming sessions will continue to delve into other strategic areas for the future of the port ecosystem such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data governance, open innovation, financing, and change management.
