Star Container Spain has joined the Green Strategy of the Algeciras Port Authority (APBA). The Maersk Group company, dedicated to the storage, maintenance, and repair of maritime containers, recently signed its adherence during a meeting with the President of the APBA, Gerardo Landaluce, and his team.
During the event, David Luque, head of Star Container Spain's container depot in Algeciras; Domingo Gutiérrez, director of Maersk's depots in Europe; and Samuel Moreno, technical coordinator and Environment manager, informed the APBA about the various initiatives carried out by the company at its Cortijo Real facilities to reduce its carbon footprint by 57% in just two years.
To achieve this, Star Container operates in alignment with sustainability principles and continuous improvement, holding certified management systems for energy and waste. Among its main achievements is the calculation of its carbon footprint for Scopes 1 and 2, a methodology validated and certified by Afnor that allows them to identify and reduce emissions associated with the journey of each container within their facilities.
Thanks to the implemented measures, the company managed to reduce its carbon footprint per TEU by 57% between 2023 and 2025, and its total carbon footprint by up to 40%, consolidating its commitment to energy efficiency and decarbonization.
During the meeting, both entities also highlighted the importance of continuing to strengthen cooperation between the port and the companies operating in its environment to address the challenges of energy transition, decarbonization, and the generation of sustainable value for the territory.
Furthermore, Star Container incorporates circular economy principles into its daily activities through the repair, reconditioning, and extension of the useful life of containers. This practice contributes to reducing the need to manufacture new units, decreasing the consumption of raw materials, energy, and emissions associated with production processes.
The APBA's Green Strategy is an initiative that promotes collaboration among companies in the community, and with this addition, it now includes a total of 45 organizations committed to the environment, with the common purpose of advancing towards a more sustainable and innovative port model.
With this ratification, Star Container reaffirms its commitment to the objectives of the APBA Green Strategy as a roadmap that seeks to foster environmental, social, and economic sustainability throughout the port community, promoting the active participation of companies and organizations in building an increasingly competitive and resilient port.
